The transformation of the old AV Market and Pub to the newly rehabed Fire Station No.5

Back in May of 2007 a survey was sent to all citizens asking for their opinion on what to do with this location. Although there were several options not listed on the survey, (such as restoring the building in the present location and having it used as a grocery store), it seems clear that most of those who responded to the survey would like to see a grocery store or restaurant in this location. Before the Council makes a decision on this building more information and dollar amounts must be gathered. Since this is the last remaining building from the 1940s and Camp Adair, the historical significance must also be considered.
A decision was made by the Council at the June 19 meeting to preserve the building which recently housed the AV Market and Pub.At this time it is being inspected for the possible necessity of asbestos abatement. Next will be a process of cleaning out the building and preparing it for a new tenant.
This old and historic building has been given a face lift! You may have noticed the new windows, new flashing and outside paint and Fire Brick Red trim around the windows, which ties in with the color of the roof and brick chimney. Improvements inside the building include plumbing and electricity which meets today’s code, re-building of the restrooms and the installation of an all new heating and air conditioner system. It has been exciting to watch the old building, which has been on eyesore to for so long, begin to realize the potential to become an attractive and functional structure at the entrance to our town.
On Saturday, February 23rd, an open house was held in our newly restored Firehouse #5 building. By all appearances this celebration was a great success! Many residents of our town attended as well as citizens and elected officials from throughout Benton County. Much of the credit for this pleasant day goes to our own City staff Angela, Julie and Judy. They worked hard for many hours to make sure that all the details from great food to decorations and historical memorabilia from the 1940’s, (when the building was built and was used as a firehouse), came together smoothly. Many thanks to these folks! Also, thanks to our volunteer Fire and Rescue people for their participation with their fire engine and fireman hats for the children. Balloons on the ceiling, and soon in children’s hands, added to the festivities. A very special thanks to Candice Dinnis, and her husband John, and to the Oregon & Southern Idaho Laborers-Employers Training school for their volunteer labor. We also want to thank all of the people who were hired to work on the renovation and who gave of their time and effort above and beyond what was required or expected. It was a monumental effort by many people which resulted in great success. Candice Dinnis, project manager, expressed it best when she said, “It was a labor of love”.
FIREHOUSE #5 MARKET AND RESTAURANT: The City of Adair Village has signed a lease agreement with Ed and Lois Dasteur. The Dasteurs’ currently live in Philomath but have indicated interest in eventually relocating to Adair Village. Their children attend Santiam Christian School. They plan to open their market to the public in 45 to 60 days. The market will include a deli with both cold and hot food and there will be an area where deli foods can be taken and enjoyed in the upper part of the building. The lease agreement calls for the full restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, to be opened by April 1, 2009. We look forward to shopping in our own market again and having a meal in a second dining establishment in our town.
